Acne affects
each person differently. There are some people who come out of puberty
and early adulthood unscathed by breakouts. There are others who
suffer from obvious scarring and blemishes from years of severe
breakouts that are irreversible. Plastic surgery for acne scars
can be an option for individuals to explore changing the appearance
of their skin. When looking into plastic surgery here is what you
should know.
Scars from acne
scarring are broken into two categories. There are scars that occur
as a result of loss of skin tissue meaning atrophic, and there are
scars that are a result of excessive over growth of tissue, meaning
hypertrophic.
In each of these
categories, by visual observation, the scarring can be seen as having
characteristics of being made by an ice pick, having the appearance
of a square appearance of box car, having a rolling appearance,
or raised and smooth, called a keloid.
In order to treat these unusual skin abnormalities, special surgical
procedures can be performed to either raise the skin up to create
a more even appearance, or to remove the excess skin to bring the
area down to smoothe out the area. Using dermabrasion and laser
resurfacing, the job of achieving a more normal complexion can be
achieved with the help of a licensed dermatologist or esthetician.
Dermabrasion
is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing the top layer of
the skin using a wire or diamond burr. The device acts like a sander
to remove and smoothe dead tissue and scars. Pain from this procedure
if a light abrasion is used is minimal and recovery time is 5 to
8 days.
Laser resurfacing
uses carbon dioxide (CO2) to create a laser beam that vaporizes
the skin in thin layers at a time. For small areas of treatment,
a local anesthesia will be used, but if a whole facial treatment
is desired, then a general anesthetic will be administered for a
more pleasant experience. Twenty-four hours after treatment a strict
schedule of cleaning the treated area is required 4-5 times daily
with the application of a petroleum jelly based lubricant to discourage
scabbing. Recovery time will take between 10-21 days. Due to this
intense follow up, it is recommended to schedule time off accordingly.
Plastic surgery
for acne scars is as close as your local dermatologist office or
plastic surgeon's office. What you should know is that dermabrasion
and laser resurfacing to treat acne have been tried and tested for
decades and are a safe form of treatment in a wide array of skin
types, ethnicities, and ages. See a provider in your local area
to find out how it can work for you.
